Navigating Thanksgiving Solo: 10 Tools for the Lonely Warrior

Thanksgiving is a time that traditionally revolves around family and togetherness. But what if you find yourself alone, without the company of loved ones, on this special day? It can hit you like a ton of bricks, leaving you feeling isolated and lost. Let's be honest – it can feel like a total emotional kick in the gut. It's crucial not to let these feelings take over. Here are 10 detailed tools to help navigate Thanksgiving when you're flying solo:

1. Own it:

   - Acknowledge the feelings of loneliness and don't beat yourself up for having them. It's completely okay to feel this way during the holiday season.

2. Create Your Tradition:

   - Why not start your own Thanksgiving tradition? Plan a day that is entirely about you. Eat your favorite meal, have your favorite dessert, binge watch your shows, or go for a drive. Do whatever feels right for you.

3. Social Network:

   - Remember, friends can be your chosen family, it’s not about “blood”.  Spend Thanksgiving with friends, even if they're miles away (virtual Friendsgiving).

4. Volunteer:

   - A powerful way to combat loneliness is by giving back. Find local shelters or charities needing volunteers during the holiday season. Not only will you be making a difference in the lives of others, but you'll also experience a sense of fulfillment.

5. Solo Feast:

   - Don't underestimate the importance of a traditional Thanksgiving meal, even if you're alone. Make a meal just for yourself, with all the dishes you love. Savor each bite and take your time; you deserve it. Remember Kevin in “Home Alone”?

6. Escape:

   - Sometimes, a change of scenery can do wonders for your soul and spirit. If you can, take a trip, explore a new place, or find solace in the beauty of nature. It's a powerful way to recharge and find peace. Where’s a place you’d love to go?

7. Express Your Feelings:

   - Yeah, those wonderful things we hate to talk about, feelings\emotions. Emotions can be heavy, and it's important to let them out, not stuff them down. Write in a journal to process your thoughts and feelings, talk to a therapist (right here) 🤙😉 or just vent to someone you trust.

8. Avoid Comparisons:

   - It's tempting to scroll through social media but it’s the worst thing to do because it can trigger feelings of loneliness. Just don’t!! Remember, people tend to post their highlight reel, and it's not always an accurate representation of their real lives. It’s usually inflated, filtered fluff.

9. Plan for the Future:

   - Use this time to set goals and plan for the future. Visualize what you want for your next Thanksgiving. Whether it's building new relationships or rekindling old ones, this can be a motivating and empowering exercise. Or the hell with Thanksgiving and just set general goals.Whatever you decide, make it work for you.

10. Embrace Gratitude:

   - Thanksgiving is ultimately about gratitude, right? Take time to reflect on whats positive in your life.

Thanksgiving can be a tough holiday when you find yourself alone. But, you have the strength to face it head-on. Use these tools to get through it with resilience and grace. Remember, it's just one day out of many, and there are countless more ahead for you to create the life you want. Don't let this destroy you; instead, use it as an opportunity for growth, self-discovery, and independence. You’re a warrior, and this Thanksgiving can be a personal victory on the road to a more fulfilling life.
