Stronger Body, Stronger Life:
Build the confidence and resilience to meet life's challenges head on.
-Gavin Meenan
When you work with me, you are getting a real person, someone has lived through real life experiences that you can probably connect with on some level. With me you get someone who has recovered from childhood abandonment (numerous times), an adoption gone terribly wrong, juvenile delinquency, drug addiction, sexual assault, being a high school dropout, teen pregnancy, multiple failed marriages, single parenting, and abusive relationships. Need I go on?
Yet you also get someone who got herself clean from teen drug addiction and has been for many years. Someone who worked two full time jobs while putting herself through college full time as a single parent, and got a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees: all after being a high school dropout. Someone who has built a solid life and profession for herself, worked in corrections and law enforcement, raised truly amazing and successful kids, renewed her faith, and is now stronger than she ever has been. Someone once told me I’m a Thug; according to his definition, Thug, meaning survivor, you bet your ass I’m a Thug, and proud of it!
What is working with me like?
Everything you’ve thought or experienced in therapy in the past, throw that out the window. Therapy with me is different and I do that because I want our time together to be real. No fluff, no therapist jargon, no censorship. Just you meeting with a real person, with real life experience, who gets you. I’m not Frasier Crane, I’m not going to be offended if you cuss or yell in our sessions. You can cuss, yell, cry, whatever the hell you need to do to process; therapy isn't charm and beauty school, I am not going to tell you to watch your language or not cry. It’s your therapy and I want you to feel comfortable to be you, to be authentic, to be able to do the deep work you need to do to heal. And you’ll get the same from me. You’ll get my heavy metal/rock/country/rap loving, car racing, Lord of the Rings/Fast and Furious/Underworld, Chick Flick and horror film watching, dark humor perspective coupled with my love of working with law enforcement, first responders, military, delinquents (that's what I was called), and people who have experienced a shit ton of trauma in their lives. Basically, that’s me wrapped up in a nutshell. But I also work with college students, moms and dads, professionals, etc. Anyone who has something to work through or on.
So…that’s authenticity and honesty, what has always worked in therapy for me. To build connections with my clients that allow them to be real, no masks, no pretending, just being 100. That’s why my law enforcement and military clients feel comfortable texting me "FUCK!!" when they realize they have forgotten a session and I know that means, “dammit, I'm sorry, I forgot my appointment, my bad”. That’s the rapport we build together, and I want you to understand that because you won’t find that with a lot of other therapists.
I will challenge you; I will push you, and I will motivate you and I do this because I want you to reach the goals you set for yourself. If you’re looking for someone who is going to do all the work for you and fix you, that’s not me…and if you’re looking for someone to sit here and tell you it’s okay to feel sorry for yourself and give up, that’s not me either.
I'm not for everyone and that's okay, there are therapists out there who fit the bill for them. But, if you want direct, authentic, down to earth therapy with someone who won't judge you and you're willing to do the work, then I am the person for you and I got you.
The ball is in your court……
